MITCHELL MUSEUM

The Mitchell Museum sits on 40-acre property in South Central Texas in Lavaca County. It is the only black cultural institution in the county. Founded by Naomi Mitchell-Carrier, this museum was developed from a restored church turned house. The property was purchased by Marshall and Malinda Mitchell in 1917.  The church was built by Marshal Mitchell in 1913. In 1936 the church was moved from Sweet Home Texas to where it now sits, north of Sublime Texas.

There are four rooms in all, representing family, Texas, music and women. This is where Naomi teaches the art of preservation of family and community history. The museum is open every 4th Saturday starting in Spring 2019 or you can schedule a visit by contacting TCAALH for an appointment or a field trip.
