The Carrier Collection:
House Full o’Blues
This eclectic collection of Posters collected by Eugene Carrier during his travels as keyboardist with the B. B. King Band from 1979-1989. Posters reveal the extent to which Black music has been celebrated in every corner of the world from Ray Charles in Toyohashi, Japan, to "Ain’t Misbehavin’" in Tel Aviv, Israel. Traveling exhibit includes 30 vintage prints with an educational guide. Premiered at Project Row Houses, Houston, TX. 1997-98 as a memorial tribute to the late Eugene Carrier, 1946-1997.

One Family’s Journey:
From Africa to Texas 1775 - 2008
The Mitchell Family of Lavaca County, Texas has roots that run from1775 in Davidson County, TN to Sweet Home, TX, where Hannah West arrived in 1854 with the Washington West family. Included in history of the West family is George Washington West, famed cattleman and trail driver. From this branch of the Family Tree, comes Malinda Mullin Mitchell, born to Sarah West, daughter of Hannah West. Isaac Newton Mitchell who arrived in Texas in 1838 was the owner of Bankston Mitchell, father of Marshall Mitchell from Adams Branch, TX. Marshall, was a minister of the Gospel, landowner and builder since 1917, and husband of Malinda Mullin, who graduated Prairie View in 1911. Landowners, builders, educators, cattlemen, and all a proud family whose story takes you from the shores of Elmina in Ghana West Africa to the Lavaca River in South Texas.

The Underground Railroad Quilts: From Texas to Mexico
The secrets in songs and quilts with music for sing-a-longs and colorful replicas of 12 quilts believed to serve as possible maps for fugitives seeking asylum in Canada or even in Mexico. Quilt patterns are based on Hidden in Plain View: A Secret Story of Quilts and the Underground Railroad by Jacqueline L. Tobin and Raymond G. Dobard. Traditional songs form the backdrop for this exhibit bound to highlight the past from a new perspective, with textures of fabric and sound.

Talking Back Living History (TBLH) is a 501(c)(3) Texas-based organization that provides educational programs, special attractions and local and state travel packages for cultural and heritage tourism. TBLH has been a cooperative venture with Sam Houston Museum on the campus of Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas since 1999. We specialize in interpretive history programs and tours that celebrate the diversity of Texas history with emphasis on the contributions of African Americans. TBLH is the parent company of the Texas Center for African American Living History.
